We covered the loss of the huge upcoming heavyweight co-main event for UFC Fight Night 76 yesterday with the statement that Stipe Miocic has been forced to back from his fight from Ben Rothwell, but there’s more to the story and some other fight announcements/injuries to go over today. UFC is apparently searching for a brief notice substitute for Miocic to intervene and combat Rothwell in Dublin, and a few notable names put their names into the ring. The very first was Matt Mitrione, who had been fighting very well against Rothwell earlier this season before diving right into a takedown effort that got him submitted immediately via guillotine choke. Mitrione wouldn’t likely be the first option owing to his quick defeat, but he’s a situation considering his desire for salvation. The largest problem with Mitrione right now is that the simple fact he’s currently booked to combat Travis Browne in January. The other and most fascinating replacement opportunity came out of left field as world class kickboxer Tyrone Spong requested a chance to fight Rothwell. Spong, who now trains with the Blackzilians in Boco Ratan, has made a name for himself as perhaps the very best light heavyweight striker in the world with a kickboxing listing of 74-7-1 with one no contest. His mixed martial arts qualifications, but are a lot more sparse. Spong is now 2-0 in MMA, with two victories under the World collection of Fighting banner, even though he hasn’t fought with an MMA bout in over two decades and hasn’t competed professionally in any battle sport since suffering a leg injury against Gokhan Saki 18 months ago. The biggest problem here will be cash, as I am convinced signing Spong to some UFC deal on short notice wouldn’t come cheap. In other injury replacement information… Justin Lawrence vs Emmanuel Sanchez — Bellator 145 Unfortunately, an injury to former two-time Bellator champion Pat Curran has forced him out of his struggle against Justin Lawrence just over three weeks before their bout was set to happen. In measures Emmanuel Sanchez, a 25-year old fighter out of the Roufusport Gym in Milwaukee with an 11-2 record overall. Sanchez is currently 3-1 under the Bellator bannerlosing a decision to Curran already and most recently picked up a split decision victory over Henry Corrales two and a half ago at Bellator 143. This will surely not be a simple for battle for Sanchez, particularly on short notice and with such a quick turnaround. I’d expect Lawrence for a moderate to heavy preferred by the time that the odds are drawn upward.
