霧雨魔理沙在舊五作的《封魔錄》中初登場，但當時稱作魔梨沙，外觀也與現時不同，是紅髮紫服。第3作改為金髮，第5作改為黑色衣服。由於有不少玩家把舊五作和WIN版《東方》系列視作同世界觀的不同作品，因此魔梨沙是否魔理沙，則到目前仍具相當的爭議性。在一眾《東方》角色中，其實只有少數是人類，而魔理沙也是其中之一。她是居住於魔法森林的魔法使(注意魔法使是職業而不是種族)，喜歡經常騎著掃帚四處收集東西，並視不用修行也相當強大的靈夢為對手，一直努力地在後面追趕著她。本人個性直率但喜歡惡作劇，房間髒亂程度更是幻想鄉第一。

魔理沙其實是位於幻想鄉人里的道具店「霧雨家」的獨生女，因為私人理由而離家出走，搬進魔法森林自己生活，並開設霧雨魔法店。委託工作的內容小至賭博的預言，大至幫忙解決異變，都是接受的範圍內；成功的話她便拿下報酬，失敗的話則一文不取，意外地心腸不錯。(還是說因為沒工作找上門？)她使用的魔法十分華麗，啟動的方式卻很通俗：首先到相應的地方去採摘異常的蘑菇，經過數日獨門秘方調配熬煮成湯汁後，再加入幾種材料調配並曬乾成固體，再將其加熱變回山之水，便拿來進行各種實驗，有時候就能發動十分稀有的魔法。由此可見，她的魔法外表雖然看來華麗瀟灑，但實際上是背後默默耕耘、由努力堆積而成的結晶，不過她卻不太願意被別人看到她努力的樣子。彈幕以星形及直線為主，著名技是恋符「マスタースパーク」(可說是魔理沙的代名詞)。
至於魔理沙另一個「工作」，可算是在幻想鄉中極為有名的「強盜」了，而且她幹此「工作」比起當魔法師更熱心。她的行動方針是堂堂正正地硬闖進去，大大方方地說「暫時借走」。各種特別的魔導書都是她的目標，據說紅魔鄉圖書館經常被她光顧。此外，魔理沙更出了名「一借無回頭」的人，其理由是「我是人類你們是妖怪，妖怪壽命那麼長，我死了之後你們自己拿回去不就好了？」。與妖怪相比，人類的生命的確就如同須臾(很短的時間)一樣。
